The Negro in the American Revolution
Published in Hardcover by Univ of North Carolina Pr (December, 1961)
Average review score:

quarles' efforts worth whileThe primary concern of Benjamin Quarles in his work The Negro in the American Revolution is to bring greater attention to the Negro as an overlooked role-player during the revolutionary period. Quarles postulates that the American Negroes actually personified the movement for independence through their own desire for freedom, and were moved to action not by loyalty to any particular flag or place, but rather by a freshly awakened hope for personal independence and individual "unalienable rights". It was logical, Quarles suggests, that the Negro would gravitate toward the side that made the best promise of freedom, even if this side was often the British, the very nation that the white colonists were rebelling against under cries of enslavement. Using extensive research and many specific instances to portray the sentiments of Negroes as a whole, Quarles is successfully able to prove this thesis.

The Origin of Stars and Planetary Systems (NATO A S I Series. Series C, Mathematical and Physical Sciences.Vol. 540)
Published in Hardcover by Kluwer Academic Publishers (July, 1999)
Average review score:

A great introductionThis is a nice introduction to the field of star and planet formation. It is a bit more instructive than the similar _Protostars and Planets IV_, meaning that many of the chapters are genuinely useful at the graduate student level. However not all of the chapters are written equally well. Some contain breath-takingly comprehensive looks at their subject matters (e.g., the chapters by Chris McKee, Telemachios Mouschovios, Rafael Bachiller), while others could have been fleshed out a little more. All in all though, the book is a great companion to the larger (but same priced) _PP IV_. Although it was published first and so is slightly more dated and it is not as comprehensive as that other volume, I would recommend this over _PP IV_ for students in astrophysics on a limited budget--mainly because of its readability for second year and above graduate students.

Outdoor Lighting Pattern Book
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Professional (01 November, 1996)
Average review score:

expert opinionRead the editorial review thoroughly. This book is about large-scale public lighting such as streets, parks and parking lots. The title misled me but my wife, an architect, commandeered the book for her own reference library. I, of course, was looking for something more like Jan Moyer's "The Landscape Lighting Book".

A Palestinian State: Implications for Security & American Policy
Published in Paperback by Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs (30 April, 1999)
Average review score:

Well argued, timely and InterestingAn interesting read. Though the topic of this book isn't exactly a burning interest of mine, the recent election of Barak and all the discussion of the Palestinians getting their own country, I decided to read my roommate's copy. The book's wide variety of contributors, including a U.S. Senator and diverse topics, including terrorism, the U.S. and Israeli, as well as Jordanian viewpoints, and even the effect that such a state would have on the amount of drinking water in the region give it greater depth than just focusing on military or defense issues. By providing more than one author's viewpoint, the book spans a spectrum of issues and views with up to date articles that are extremely interesting, though a few are a bit on the short side. What impressed me most is that a good deal of though went into this book, meaning that the messages it conveys are credible and food for thought, rather than simply alarmist or sensationalistic, as many news stories have been of late. Despite the fact that it is only 68 pages long, the fact that these articles can only be found in this book and the fact that the arguments they make and the facts they present are EXTREMELY timely make this book well worth the money.

Passkey for Life Insurance Licensing/Final Examination
Published in Paperback by R & R Newkirk (September, 1993)
Average review score:

I got the license...guess that's the best referralThe red see-through thing that reveals the answers to the quizzes is a little juvenile...I'd have preferred the answers on another page myself because if you ever played password in your life, you'll remember that you can see right through that stuff whether you want to or not. HOWEVER, that said, this is a really well-written tool and the many self-testing quizzes through it were very helpful to say the least. I'd buy it again if I had to do this again which I don't - THANK GOODNESS!

Passtrak Series 3: Principles and Practices: National Commodity Futures Exam
Published in Paperback by Longman Financial Service (February, 1997)
Average review score:

This book is all you need to pass the Series 3Using only this book and the companion volume of practice tests, I was able to pass the Series 3 with ease. The book recommends planning for 40 hours total study time, which I found to be about right. The 2 Passtrak books for the Series 3 were the most cost effective guides I could find and I recommend them to anyone preparing for the exam.

Passtrak: Life and Health Insurance
Published in Paperback by Dearborn Trade Publishing (October, 2001)
Average review score:

Good combination of Life & Health (Accident & Disability)Combines the Dearborne Pastrack Health Insurance & Life Insurance License Exam Manuals.
Overall it is a good study guide (I passed using this book with 2 weeks of leisurely at home study), but the test section could be revamped - it did not include enough questions that were like the ones on the actual exam (I took an Experior Online state exam).

Pinyin Chinese English Dictionary
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (December, 1979)
Average review score:

Better than Oxford (Pinyin users only)Having studied Chinese for 5 years using the same Oxford dictionary, I thought I could find no better resource in my studies. However, I stumbled upon this dictionary at my university library and have fallen in love. It provides the pinyin accessibility as well as a good radical index for those characters you can't pronounce. It also provides a nice selection of variants with each character - and it's a paperback!
My only complaints are the price (a bit high) and the tiny print. However, I've yet to see a decent Chinese-English dictionary without tiny print.
The catalogue suffers a bit from the fact that only a handful of the works depicted could be published as color plates. (A unique velvet Florida Seminole man's Big Shirt that's still on display at the Mitchell Museum up in Evanston is one of the color plates.) Again, it's information is rather basic, but I still refer to this book on a daily basis.
